This book tells the history and explains in detail how coal mine tipples (also called preparation plants) worked, concentrating on the 1940s-60s era. C&Os lines were dotted with hundreds of tipples that delivered coal to the waiting cars for transport to the huge terminals and for on-line use. They ranged from simple truck tipples to monstrous preparation plants capable of delivering many thousands of tons per day. The workings of the tipples, their design, construction, machinery, and operating procedures are covered in detail.
