Tupolev’s Tu-22M Backfire is a significant redevelopment of its predecessor, the Tu-22 Blinder. Developed in the late 1960s, The Backfire incorporated many technical developments and solved many of the Blinder’s unpleasant flight characteristics. The Backfire assumed the role of a Maritime Patrol and Strike aircraft and was designed to deliver the Kh-22 anti-ship missile. It is believed that 66 Backfires are still used by the Russian Federation today. This boxing of Trumpeter’s Tu-22M3 represents the Backfire-C, after the 1983 upgrades that featured the optional reconnaissance nose.
