Background on the 24 Hours of Nrburgring: –
Germany’s Nrburgring is renowned globally for being one of the most demanding racing circuits. Established in 1927, this track stretches nearly 30 kilometres and is characterized by its challenging corners. Its road surface mirrors that of a typical public road, and a distinctive aspect of the track is its lack of flat sections, featuring various manually-created undulations. These elements collectively present a formidable challenge to competing vehicles, making the Nrburgring an ideal testing ground for automotive manufacturers. The circuit hosts the annual 24 Hours of Nrburgring race, a testament to its demanding nature.
- The inaugural 24 Hours of Nrburgring race took place in 1970 and has since become a yearly event, typically held between May and June. It attracts over 200 teams and cars, from factory to private entrants. This event showcases a diverse array of touring cars, from the latest models to older ones, highlighting the depth of European motorsport.
- Success in this race is not just about endurance; it’s also a demonstration of a manufacturer’s technical prowess. Consequently, many carmakers, including Audi, participate in this endurance race to test and showcase their technological advancements. Audi the German manufacturer, regularly competes in the 24 Hours of Nrburgring.
- At the Paris Motor Show in October 2018, Audi unveiled the R8 LMS EVO GT3, an evolution of the R8 GT3 introduced in 2009. This model featured aerodynamic enhancements, an improved cooling system, and a power system optimized for better drivability.
- In the 2019 race held from June 22nd to 23rd, Audi fielded five R8 LMS EVO GT3s in the GT3 class, each equipped with a mid-mounted 5,200cc V10 engine. The No. 4 car from Audi Sport Team Phoenix emerged victorious after a tightly contested race.
- In the final two hours, the No. 4 Audi and its closest competitor, a Porsche, were neck and neck. However, the Audi team chose 21-year-old Belgian driver Dries Vanthoor for the last stint, who delivered an exceptional performance, gradually extending the lead. Vanthoor’s impressive driving secured the top spot for Audi, marking their first victory at the 24 Hours of Nrburgring since 2017.
